What is the difference between HPMC K series and E series?

HPMC (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose) is a multifunctional material widely used in pharmaceutical, food, building materials and other fields. HPMC products can be divided into multiple series according to different application requirements, among which the more common ones are K series and E series. Although both are HPMC, they have certain differences in chemical structure, physical properties and application fields.

1. Difference in chemical structure
Methoxy content: The main difference between K series and E series HPMC is their methoxy content. The methoxy content of E series HPMC is higher (generally 28-30%), while the methoxy content of K series is relatively low (about 19-24%).
Hydroxypropoxy content: In contrast, the hydroxypropoxy content of K series (7-12%) is higher than that of E series (4-7.5%). This difference in chemical composition leads to differences in performance and application between the two.

2. Differences in physical properties
Solubility: Due to the difference in methoxy and hydroxypropoxy content, the solubility of K series HPMC is slightly lower than that of E series, especially in cold water. The E series is more soluble in cold water due to its higher methoxy content.

Gel temperature: The gel temperature of K series is higher than that of E series. This means that under the same conditions, it is more difficult for K series HPMC to form gel. The gel temperature of E series is lower, and in some specific applications, such as thermosensitive gel materials, E series may perform better.

Viscosity: Although viscosity mainly depends on the molecular weight of HPMC, under the same conditions, the viscosity of E series HPMC is usually higher than that of K series. The difference in viscosity has a significant impact on the rheological properties during the preparation process, especially when applied to coatings and suspensions.

3. Differences in application fields
Due to the differences in chemical structure and physical properties of K series and E series HPMC, their applications in different fields are also different.

Pharmaceutical field: In pharmaceutical preparations, E series HPMC is often used as the main ingredient of sustained-release preparations. This is due to its low gelation temperature and high viscosity, which enables it to better control the drug release rate when forming a drug sustained-release film. The K series is more used for enteric-coated tablets and as a capsule wall material, because its high gelation temperature inhibits the release of drugs in gastric juice, which is conducive to the release of drugs in the intestine.

Food field: In the food industry, E series HPMC is often used as a thickener, stabilizer and emulsifier. Due to its high solubility and suitable viscosity, it can be better dispersed and dissolved in food. The K series is mostly used in foods that need to maintain stability under high temperature conditions, such as baked products, due to its high gelation temperature.

Building materials field: In building materials, K series HPMC is usually used in dry mortar and putty powder, acting as a water retainer and thickener, especially for occasions that need to be constructed at high temperatures. The E series is more suitable for materials with high rheological properties such as floor paint and coatings due to its low gelation temperature and high viscosity.

4. Other influencing factors
In addition to the above differences, the specific uses of different series of HPMC may also be affected by factors such as molecular weight, degree of substitution, and dispersibility. In addition, in practical applications, the selection of HPMC also needs to consider its compatibility with other ingredients and its impact on the performance of the end product.

Although the K series and E series of HPMC are both hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, they show obvious differences in physical properties and application areas due to the different contents of methoxy and hydroxypropoxy groups. Understanding these differences is crucial to choosing the right type of HPMC in practical applications.
