Is there any experimental data that can prove the specific impact of HPMC on mortar properties?

Thermal and mechanical properties: a study
It shows that HPMC can improve the thermal and mechanical properties of plastering mortar. By adding different concentrations of HPMC (0.015%, 0.030%, 0.045%, and 0.060%), the researchers found that lighter materials could be produced with a weight reduction of 11.76% due to the high porosity caused by HPMC. This high porosity aids in thermal insulation, reducing the material’s electrical conductivity by up to 30% while maintaining a fixed heat flux of approximately 49 W when subjected to the same heat flux. The resistance to heat transfer through the panel varied with the amount of HPMC added, with the highest incorporation of the additive resulting in a 32.6% increase in thermal resistance compared to the reference mixture.

Water retention, workability and strength: another study
It was found that HPMC can significantly improve the water retention, cohesion and sag resistance of mortar, and significantly improve the tensile strength and bonding strength of mortar. At the same time, HPMC can effectively inhibit the formation of plastic cracks in mortar and reduce the plastic cracking index. The water retention of mortar increases as the viscosity of HPMC increases. When the viscosity of HPMC exceeds 40000 mPa·s, the water retention no longer increases significantly.

Viscosity test method: When studying the viscosity test method of high-viscosity hydroxypropyl methylcellulose
, found that HPMC has good dispersion, emulsification, thickening, bonding, water retention and glue retention properties. These properties make HPMC widely used in the construction industry.

Volume stability: A study on the effect of HPMC dosage on the early volume stability of Portland cement-aluminate cement-gypsum ternary composite self-leveling mortar
It shows that HPMC has a significant impact on the workability of self-leveling mortar. After incorporating HPMC, the workability of self-leveling mortar such as bleeding and segregation settlement is significantly improved. However, excessive dosage is not conducive to the fluidity of self-leveling mortar. The optimal dosage is 0.025%~0.05%. At the same time, as the HPMC content increases, the compressive strength and flexural strength of self-leveling mortar decrease to varying degrees.

Effect on the strength of plastically formed ceramic green bodies: an experiment
The effect of different HPMC contents on the flexural strength of ceramic green bodies was studied, and it was found that the flexural strength first increased and then decreased with the increase of HPMC content. When the HPMC addition amount was 25%, the green body strength was the highest at 7.5 MPa.

Dry mix mortar performance: a study
It was found that different amounts and viscosities of HPMC have significant effects on the working performance and mechanical properties of dry-mixed mortar. HPMC has the ability to retain water and thicken. When the dosage is higher than 0.6%, the fluidity of the mortar decreases; when the dosage is 0.4%, the water retention rate of the mortar can reach 100%. However, HPMC significantly reduces strength, by as much as 75%.

Effects on cement-stabilized full-depth cold recycled mixes: a study
It was found that HPMC will reduce the flexural and compressive strength of cement mortar specimens after cement hydration due to the air-entraining effect. However, the cement is hydrated in the dispersion of HPMC dissolved in water. Compared with the cement that is hydrated first and then mixed with HPMC, the flexural and compressive strengths of the cement mortar specimens are increased.

These experimental data and research results show that HPMC has a positive effect in improving the water retention of mortar, improving workability, and improving thermal performance, but it may also have an impact on the strength and volume stability of mortar. Therefore, in practical applications, the dosage and specifications of HPMC need to be reasonably selected based on specific engineering requirements and environmental conditions to achieve the best mortar performance.
