Application of HPMC in gypsum-based plaster and gypsum products

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is a high-performance additive widely used in building materials, especially in the production of gypsum-based plasters and gypsum products.

(1) Basic properties of HPMC

HPMC is a nonionic cellulose ether obtained through methylation and hydroxypropylation reactions. Its main features include high water solubility, excellent thickening properties, stable chemical properties and good film-forming properties. These properties make HPMC widely used in building materials.

(2) Application of HPMC in gypsum-based plaster

1. Thickening agent function

In gypsum-based plaster, HPMC is mainly used as a thickening agent. Its good water solubility and thickening properties can significantly improve the viscosity and stability of stucco, prevent delamination and precipitation, thereby improving construction performance and finished product quality.

2. Water retention

HPMC has excellent water retention and can effectively reduce the rapid loss of water. In gypsum-based plasters, this property helps to extend workability and improve construction results while preventing cracking and shortening caused by rapid evaporation of water.

3. Enhance adhesion

HPMC can enhance the adhesion between plaster and substrate. This is because the film formed by HPMC after drying has a certain degree of flexibility and adhesion, thereby improving the bonding force between the plaster and the wall or other substrates and preventing it from falling off.

(3) Application of HPMC in gypsum products

1. Improve processing performance

In the production of gypsum products, HPMC can improve the fluidity and uniformity of the slurry, reduce the generation of bubbles, and make the product denser and more uniform. At the same time, the thickening effect of HPMC helps to form a smooth coating on the surface of the product and improves the appearance quality of the product.

2. Improve crack resistance

The water retention of HPMC in gypsum products helps control the release rate of water and reduce internal stress caused by uneven water evaporation, thus improving the crack resistance and overall strength of the product. Especially in dry environments, the water retention effect of HPMC is more significant and can effectively prevent early cracking of products.

3. Improve mechanical properties

The evenly distributed fiber network formed by HPMC in gypsum products can improve the toughness and impact resistance of the products. This feature makes gypsum products less susceptible to damage during transportation and installation, extending their service life.

(4) Application advantages of HPMC

1. Improve construction efficiency

Because HPMC improves the operability and construction performance of gypsum-based plaster and gypsum products, the construction process is smoother and more efficient, reducing the number of reworks and repairs, thereby improving overall construction efficiency.

2. Environmental protection and safety

As a material of natural origin, HPMC does not produce harmful substances during its production and use, and meets environmental protection and safety requirements. In addition, HPMC does not release harmful gases during use, making it safe for construction workers and end users.

3. Economic benefits

The application of HPMC can significantly improve the performance and quality of gypsum-based materials, thereby reducing material waste and rework costs and improving economic benefits. At the same time, the high efficiency of HPMC enables significant effects to be achieved even with a small amount of addition, and has a good cost performance.

As an important building material additive, HPMC has significant advantages in its application in gypsum-based plaster and gypsum products. Its excellent thickening, water retention and bonding properties not only improve the construction performance of the material and the quality of the finished product, but also improve the economic benefits and environmental protection performance. As the construction industry’s demand for high-performance, environmentally friendly materials increases, the application prospects of HPMC in gypsum-based materials will become even broader.
